10/28/10 Work - How is time spent during the HS years? o Group 1: many activities (researcher keeps track of how many and what activities adolescents are doing/day) o 2 types of adolescents (busy/not): Busy doing activities (extracurricular school, hanging out with friends, job) Adolescents are doing everything BUT no paid job outside home o Group 3: few activities, but have a paying job that takes up most time o Group 4: all of their free time is spent hanging out with friends - Conclusion: adolescents are working more than we expected them to - Common adolescent jobs: o Differences based on region, age, and gender Rural regions: agricultural jobs Younger teens: babysitting, yard work Other teens: employed in the retail and service industries Boys: manual labor Girls: service - The adolescent workplace o Traditional societies: Work bring adolescent into contact w/ adults adolescents work as apprentices to adults or trained by adults Usually an agricultural position
