11/9/10 Identity - Sense of identity o Changes in the degree to which individuals feel secure about who they are and where they are headed Erikson’s Theoretical framework - Individual moves through a series of 8 psychosocial crises throughout the life cycle o Each crisis builds up upon the previous one - Establishing a coherent sense of identity is the final and main crisis o Contrasts goal + opposite goal Identity versus identity diffusion o Forms identity development through interactions w/ others The social context of identity development - Cognitive (multi dimensional thinking) and social processes to develop identity - Identity development is dependent on culture, society and era - As available alternatives increase, establishing a sense of identity is more difficult - Likelihood of prolonged identity crisis is greater today than in the past o Example: range of possible careers is likely to provoke occupational identity crisis Need for Psychological Moratorium - “Time-out”: take time off from excessive responsibilities and obligations - Time to experiment w/ different roles and obligations o Year off between college and high school
