12/2/10 Sexuality Part 2 Levels of Influence On Sexual Behavior - Individual factors o Psychological and hormonal characteristics - Ecological system factors: o Family: types of parenting, family structure o Peers: if your peers are having sex or if you think they are o Media o Values o Culture Influences on Sexual Behavior: Media - Most sexual behavior on TV takes place between unmarried adults - Exposure to sexual content results in more permissive attitudes Influences on Sexual behavior: Attitudes /values - More permissive attitudes about sex predict earlier age of sexual initiation and more experience - Religion: o Regular church attendance predicts delayed sexual activity ONLY if friends attend the same church Much more of a peer influence than broader values - Gender differences in the “Meaning of Sex” o Early sexual experiences: boys are more likely to keep matters of sex and intimacy separate (they may still think intimacy is important, but they are able to keep them separate)
