Appendix A Midterm Exam Access the Week Four Electronic Reserve Readings located under the materials section of your student website. Read this week’s Electronic Reserve Readings. Write a paragraph of approximately 100 words for each section listed below. 1. Using the critical thinking skills you have gained so far and referring to the materials provided for this assignment, identify two possible strategies that Thomas Hutchinson or Samuel Adams likely used to develop and improve their thinking as those historical events unfolded prior to taking a stand and acting according to their beliefs. One strategy Thomas Hutchinson used to improve his thinking was, if words fail you at the outset, refuse to sit and stare at the page. Thomas Hutchinson was not well liked by either Colonial Americans or England, yet he still stayed true to his belief of a balanced British rule and colonial rights. Americans thought he was in the British’s back pocket, yet his actions said otherwise. It would have been easy for him to pick a side, yet he did not, and was the main reason he was not successful in his belief. Another strategy that Hutchinson used was, when the statement presents a conclusion as the only possible conclusion and other conclusions are also possible, present the other conclusions and demonstrate that they, too, are reasonable (perhaps more reasonable). The Americans and the British had separate conclusions, and were unwilling to look at any other conclusion, while Hutchinson tried in vain to show both sides there was another way to solve their problems. In the end this failed and made him look like a loyalist from one side, and an inept leader on the other side. 2. Explain the importance of building a foundation for critical and creative thinking when evaluating historical events such as the Boston Tea Party. HUM/111
