History Final Important Terms 36Degree 30’ Line – The Missouri Compromise resolved for a gen. the issue of slavery in the lands of the Louisiana purchase. The agreement prohibited slavery north of the Missouri Compromise line (36degrees 30’ North Latitude) with the exception of the state of Missouri. To maintain an equal number of senators from free and slave states in the U.S. Congress. The compromise provided for the nearly simultaneous admission to the Union of Maine and Missouri. Oregon Question/ 54 Degree 40’ or Fight - Oregon boundary dispute also referred to as “Oregon Question” arose between competing British and American claims over Oregon County. Both of the two groups had territorial and commercial interest in the Oregon country. A large part of the dispute was due to the fact that rivers fed into the Hudson Bay and the boundary line would give either British or Americans control of the fur trading. President K.Polk Democrat. Sought a compromise boundary along the 49 th parallel, while other American expansionist urged Pold to annex the entire Oregon Country up to the 54degree. This turmoil created the slogan “ Fifty Four Forty or Fight” An agreement was reached in 1846 called the OREGON TREATY. The 49 th parallel is the boundary between U.S. and Canada. Abolitionism/Abolitionist -was a political movement of the 18th and 19th century that sought to make slavery illegal in the United States and British West Indies . It began during the Enlightenment in Europe and the United States and grew to large proportions. It succeeded in making slavery illegal in the United States and British Empire . Abolitionist pressure in the United States produced a series of small steps forward. After January 1, 1808, the importation of slaves into the United States was prohibited, [37] but not the internal slave trade, nor involvement in the international slave trade externally. Legal slavery persisted; and those slaves already in the U.S. would not be legally emancipated for another 60 years. John Quincy Adams - President from 1825-1829 Republican, and for formulating the Monroe Doctrine ., as a Congressman, he was a leading opponent of the Slave Power , arguing that if a civil war ever broke out the president could abolish slavery by using his war powers , a policy followed by Abraham Lincoln in the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. To date he is the only President of the United States to subsequently serve as a Congressman. He became an important antislavery voice in the Congress Anaconda Plan - was proposed in 1861 by Union General Winfield Scott to win the American Civil War with minimal loss of life, enveloping the Confederacy by blockade at sea and control of the Mississippi River .1) Blockade the coast of the South to prevent the export of cotton , tobacco , and other cash crops from the South and to keep them from importing much-needed war supplies. 2)Divide the South by controlling the Mississippi River to cut off the southeastern states
