26) Jenner immunized his patient with cowpox and this resulted in immunity to smallpox. Write an essay outline that would have explained to Jenner the details of the cellular processes that transpired beginning with the cowpox vaccination ("encowment") and ending with production of antibodies that recognized smallpox antigens. Introduction Modern vaccinations include inactivated bacterial toxins, killed microbes, parts of microbes, weakened microbes, and even genes encoding microbial proteins Jenner’s vaccination o Jenner introduced the cowpox virus into a boy by using a needle bearing the cow pox virus from milkmaids cowpox is a nearly harmless virus to humans o Individuals who were infected with cowpox became immune to smallpox Both the cowpox virus and the small pox virus are so similar that our immune system can not distinguish between them o Thus, by introducing the harmless cowpox virus into individuals, the immune system will destroy the virus and produce memory cells against it o When an individual gets infected by the smallpox virus, the body can quickly produce antibodies from memory cells to fight the similar virus;
