Lecture 21 1) Amphibians, including salamanders, are NOT amniotes. They produce eggs externally, in the water, not an egg-shelled terrestrial egg. 2) Apes are referred to hominoids, then species that are more closely related to humans then chimps (after the split at the gibbons) are referred to hominids (ancestors to humans). We are the only living hominid. a) Hominids –Australopithecus 3) Chimps are the closest living relative to humans a) We both shared a common ancestor who was neither human nor chimp. b) Dramatic evolutionary increase in brain size – human brains are much larger than ancient or even existent great apes (gorilla, orangutan, bonobo). i) Both macaque and gorilla have a ridge on the top, important for the attachment of jaw muscles (indicated by red area). Both also have a large space through which the jaw muscles extend to attach to the lower jaw. ii) Humans have a smaller area where jaw muscles attach, no holes for muscles. c)
