AP Biology Muscle Tissues - Muscle Tissues = Consist of proteins (myosin and actins) Most abundant types of tissues in the body Controls movement either involuntarily or voluntarily - Three Types: Skeletal, Cardiac, and Smooth Muscles 1) Skeletal Muscles = Attached to the bones by tendons a) Consists of bundles of long cells (muscle fibers) b) Striated shapes c) Can be controlled voluntarily by ourselves d) Muscle fiber = a muscle cell that contains multiples of nuclei = controlled by only one neuron, not synapsed with other fibers 2) Cardiac Muscles = Found in the heart a) Striated shapes b) Forms contractile wall of the heart c) Very fibrous d) Moves involuntarily by electrical signals 3) Smooth Muscles = Found in the digestive tracts or respiratory tracts a) Not striated shapes b) Moves involuntarily - 1)

Unformatted text preview: Fast twitch muscle (White Meat) a) Low levels of myoglobin b) Considerable amount of oxygen whenever necessary. c) Relatively low amount of mitochondria d) Low blood supply. e) Appropriate for short-term duration activity 2) Slow twitch muscle (Red Meat) a) High levels of myoglobin b) Considerable amount of oxygen whenever necessary. c) Relatively high amount of mitochondria d) Rich blood supply. e) Appropriate for long-duration activity-Sarcomere = Each repeating unit of muscle; basic contractile unit of muscle 1) Found in striated muscles (cardiac muscle & skeletal muscle) 2) Consist of thick filament (myosin) and thin filament (actin) 3) M line = Consists of thick filament only; refers to the center of sarcomere 4) Z line = Consists of thin filament only; refers to the edges of sarcomere...
