AP Biology Action Potential - Action Potentials = A voltage that lets the signals conducted by axons - ‘All-None’ Law = either the action potential is reached or action potential is reached based on the membrane potential reached up to the threshold a) Threshold = minimum amount of the membrane potential that is needed to reach to the action potential (approx. -50mV for humans) b) This law states that If the membrane potential is -51mV, this won’t generate the action potential If the membrane potential is -49mV, this will generate the action potential c) This therefore means that it can be either ALL (-49mV) or NONE (-51mV) d) No matter how high the membrane potential is (-49mV or -100mV), the action potential will be generated as long as the membrane potential reaches to the threshold, and vice versa - Resting Potential (=Hyperpolarization) a) When the closed potassium (K + ) ion gated channels open, the permeability of K + increases b) A lot of K + ions efflux out of the cell
