AP Biology Vision & Vertebrate Eye - The Structure of an Vertebrate Eye 1) 2) Iris = controls the amount of light that passes through 3) Retina = contains visionary cells a) Rods = detect black and white b) Cones = detect colors (3 colors or mixtures: reds, green, and blue) c) Trichromatic theory = Humans perceive different types of colors by mixing blue, green, and red light appropriately d) The number of rods and cones depend on the animal’s day cycle. e) If the animal is more active during the day, the cones are more concentrated f) If the animal is more active during the night, the rods are more concentrated 4) Fovea = a place where cones are the most concentrated 5) Blind spot = a place where the optic nerve cells leave (no photoreceptors) 6) Choroid = thin, pigmented inner membrane structure (black) 7) Aqueous Humor = cushion (protection) & maintains constant pressure 8)
