Unformatted text preview: MGMT 312 - Assn 5-1 Assignment 5-1 MGMT 312 MGMT 312 - Assn 5-1 Assignment 5-1 The two business leaders that I choose was Steven Paul Jobs, the former CEO of Apple Incorporated, and Oprah Gail Winfrey, the ex-host of "The Oprah Winfrey Show", and the most influential woman in the world, some would say. Both of the leaders have been very successful in the areas of their careers. I think both leaders had very similar leadership approaches, they used a lot of the same leadership traits, like honesty, competent, forward-looking, intelligent, and the last one is a big one the trait of inspiration or inspiring of many people. According to Blake Mouton Managerial Grid, I believe both Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey were both team Leaders, but I think their behavioral approaches to leadership was much different. Oprah Winfrey, used more of an approach that leaned more towards the employees then the production, but production was very important to her company as well. Steve Jobs on the other hand was concerned more about production then employees, but he did take care of his employees very well. At the end of the day, to have a successful company, it takes both the concerns for the people as well as the concerns for production. Being a Team Leader is the best was to lead, having the balance of employees and production, and that is what Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs did very well. MGMT 312 - Assn 5-1 According to the course textbook there are five approaches to leadership: Trait Approaches, Behavioral Approaches, Contingency Approaches, Full-range Approaches, and Four Additional Perspectives. (Kinicki & Williams, 2011). The full-range approach fits both Steve Jobs, and Oprah Winfrey leadership approaches. Steve Jobs used a transactional leadership style, "focusing on clarifying employees' roles and task requirements and providing rewards and punishing contingent on performance."
