17:38 Westward Expansion Homestead Act Passed in 1862, the Homestead Act gave settlers 160 acres free of charge if they could  “stick it out” for 5 years. Settlers were forced to move into the drier sections of the Great Plains, after the good  lands were taken after the Civil War. People were fooled into thinking they would benefit from moving out west. The Timber Culture Act of 1873 doubled the 160 acres to 320 acres. Drought comes towards the 1890s and it becomes almost impossible to maintain the  land. The dream of owning land in the West never came around. Las Gorras Blancas Entered central New Mexico, and purchase several large tracks of land and fence them  off. Several of these tracks were owned by the Las Vegas Land Grant, given to the local

Las Gorras Blancas were a secretive group of elite who contested the encroachment on their land by the Anglos. Lakota (Sioux) – A loose confederation of Indian bands. Sand Creek Massacre Large scale resistance by the Indians first occurs in Sand Creek, Colorado. Colorado Volunteers were conducting raids of the Cheyenne. The Cheyenne leader Black Kettle decided to move the tribe to a US Fort for protection. Colorado Volunteers attacked the Cheyenne even though Black Kettle was holding a US flag and white flag.
