17:31 The Gilded Age The growing power of big business, corruption, industrialism, and racial tensions. Those  who moved out West in hopes to escape the oppression of the Northeast, were met with  similar conditions. Rise of the super rich financiers, such as Rockefellers and Vanderbilt, labor unions,  worker revolts. Upper class would call the Gilded Age, The American Renaissance. Major advances in technology and transportations. Alexander Graham Bell invents the  telephone. Edison opens his lab in 1876, and in 1880 he released the light bulb. Henry  Ford began toying with the automobile. Major force behind the Gilded Age is the railroad. By 1869, the Transcontinental  Railroad is finished and America has the most substantial transportation system in the  world. By 1900, America moves from fourth in the world in production, to first in the world. Meatpackers first began to experiment with the assembly line. Economic downturn in the early 1900s runs many of the small businesses out, leaving  the large corporations to dominate. The Upper Class differentiates itself with expensive purchases. A New Middle Class emerges, and retreats from the urban areas to the suburbs. Baseball Baseball helped create a sense of national identity. Became the “National Pastime.” Knickerbocker Base Ball Club was the first baseball club in America, in 1845. They put  the rules to the game in writing. Founding of the National League, baseball became more middle class by raising ticket  prices, and banning the sale of alcohol. The American League kept baseball lower class  by keeping ticket prices low, and promoting the sale of alcohol.
