Some useful things to know for Exam 2: GENERAL concepts from Exam 1 are used in Exam 2 but not examined directly: shapes of atomic orbitals, the Aufbau diagrams for atoms, names & symbols of elements. Chapter 13: Be able to draw a Lewis dot structure for an atom of any representative element. Ionic vs. Covalent Bonding: How do the physical properties differ? (melting point and boiling point (MP&BP), conductivity, solubility in polar and non-polar solvents, etc. Electronegativity: what is it ? what's the trend? how does it affects how “ionic” or “covalent” a substance is? Be able to compare two different covalent bonds to see which has the larger dipole. Ionic Bonding: Be able to write ion electron configurations: Know the order of the orbitals electrons are removed from to form positive ions. Know the trends for Ionic Radius for representative elements. Be able to compare lattice energy for binary ionic compounds. Know a large (negative) value of LE occurs for the combination of the (smallest cation with the highest charge) and the (smallest anion with the highest charge). This will correspond to the most stable ionic compound with the highest MP&BP - the strongest interaction between the ions. Be able to draw Lewis Dot structures of ions, and of an ionic compound: either showing the dot structures of atoms and the resulting ions, or just the ions themselves, in the correct proportions (e.g. MgCl 2 would have one Mg 2+ ions and two Cl - ions) Covalent Bonding: Be able to draw dot structures and answer questions such as: number of lone pairs, lone pairs on central atom, etc. Be able to draw dot structures for organic molecules – remember –COOH is
