Pakistan! India! Oh my! When India and Pakistan were partitioned, Kashmir had a Muslim majority but a Hindu raja. The raja asked to be part of India, and was included. Pakistan has wanted Kashmir since. Population of Pakistan: 170 million. Population of India: 1.2 billion. Both have good armies – well equipped and well trained. In the 1965 war, Pakistan did quite well given its lack of population. The Pakistanis sought to level the playing field by 1) developing nuclear capabilities to match the Indians and 2) train and support terrorist groups. The difficulty was that if they trained the terrorists in Pakistan, they could suffer diplomatic consequences. They instead used Taliban and Al-Qaida from Afghanistan. One of the most dangerous of these groups is Lashkar-i Tayyibah (from 1993). Pervez Musharraf was a dictator who came to power in 1998. He was secular, but was an ally of the Taliban and was perfectly willing to use fundamentalism. Pakistan is multi-ethnic. The major groups are the Punjabis, Sindhis, Baluchs. The Punjabis are the most educated, richest, etc. . The military is almost only Punjabi, and Cole thinks that one of
