05/24/2011 SOC 348 Barack Obama: Speech on Race 2008 I thoroughly enjoy this speech every time I listen to it. President Obama reflects on how we are all the same and we need to not only recognize that, but act on it. Race is just a concept. It is an idea that we humans have created in our minds. Throughout history we have seen devastation and dreams shattered because certain races, ethnicities, and cultures have been discriminated against through slavery, lynching, etc. Barack Obama stresses on the fact that we are all truly one. But frankly, for so many people in this nation, it is hard to believe that. We have seen several improvements over time in order to make our world a better, more equal place, but there are still many, many major changes we need to make. The main problem we see today is our attitudes and behavior. There can be all the laws we want on thin pieces of paper, but sometimes that just does not cut it. We the people are what need to change. We all love our country dearly, but we must realize that everyone is a part of it.
