Now let’s go into the details of this handy tool. CONVERT This converts a number from one measurement system to another. For example, CONVERT can translate a table of distances in miles to a table of distances in kilometers. Syntax CONVERT(number,from_unit.to_unit) Number is the value in from_units to convert. From_unit is the units for number. To_unit for from_unit and to_unit. Weight and mass u 9| Gram g u. 9| Slug 5g Pound mass (avoirdupois) U (atomic mass unit) it Ounce mass (avoirdupois) Fromfiunit or to_unit “lbm” n ozm is the units for the result. CONVERT accepts the following text values . ONVEFIT Measu m conversion function Distance From_unit or to_unit Meter “m” Statute mile “mi” Nautical mile “Nmi” Inch “in” Foot “ft” Yard “yd” Angstrom “ang” Pica (U72 in.) “Pica” Time From_unit or to_unit Year (lg!) (Iday99 Hour “ ” Minute “mu” Second “sec” Pressure From_unit or to_unit Pascal “Pa” AtmOSphere “atm” mm of Mercury “mmI-Ig” Force FronLunit or to_unit Newton “N” Dyna “dyn” Pound force “le' Energy From_unit or tofiunit Joule “I” Erg “e” Thermodynamic calorie “(2" IT calorie “cal” Electron volt “eV” Horsepower-hour “HPh” Watt-hour “Wh” Foot-pound “flb” BTU “BTU” 123 124 Chapter 6: Engineering Functions Power From_unit or to_unit Horsepower Watt Magnetism From_unit or to_unit Tesla “T” Gauss “ga” Temperature From__unit or to_unit Degree Celsius “C” Degree Fahrenheit “F” Degree Kelvin “K” Liquid memure From_unit or tofiunit Teaspoon “tsp” Tablespoon “tbs” Fluid ounce “oz” Cup “cup” Pint “pt” Quart “qt” Gallon Liter “l” Prefixes The following abbreviated unit prefixes can be used as a prefix to any metric from_un.it or to_unit. Prefix Multiplier Abbreviation exa lE+ 1 8 “E” peta 1E+ 15 “P” tera 113+ 12 “T” giga l E+09 “G” mega 1E+06 “M” kilo 1E+03 “k” hecto 1E+02 “h” dekao 1E+01 “e” deci lE-Ol “ ” centi lE—02 “c” milli lE—03 “m” micro 1E—06 “u” §.§ Matrix algebra 125 name 113-09 “n” pico IE] 2 “p” femto 11-3—15 “f” atto 1131-18 “a” Remarks If the input data types are incorrect, CONVERT returns the #VALUE! error value. If the unit does not exist, CONVERT returns the #NIA error value. If the unit does not support an abbreviated unit prefix, CONVERT returns the #ENIA error value. If the units are in different groups, CONVERT returns the #NIA error value. Unit names and prefixes are case-sensitive. Examples CONVERTUD, “lbm”, “ g") equals 0.453592 CONVERT(68, “F”, “C”) equals 20 CONVERT(2.5, "ft", “sec”) equals #NIA Don’t forget the quotation marks (“ ”). 6.6 Matrix algebra 0 Matrix algebra applications include solving systems of simultaneous linear algebraic equations in several variables and rotation of coordinate systems. The matrix algebra operations available in EXCEL are limited, but there are enough to do some useful things. If you need more advanced operations, you can use pro- grams such as MATHCAD, MATLAB, or MATl-IEMATICA. A 2x2 matrix (consist- ing of 2 rows and 2 columns) looks like this: [“11 “21] “12 “22 The determinant of a 2x2 matrix looks like this: “11 “21 =“11“22 " “12“21 (6'8) “12 “22 For example, 2 - 3 ‘7 5 ‘ =(2)(-5)—('1')(—3)= 10 + 21 = 31. (6-9) Array formulas and how to enter them An array formula can perform multiple calculations and then return either a sin- gle result or multiple results. Array formulas act on two or more sets of values ...
