SALMONELLA OUTBREAK INVESTIGATION2Salmonella Outbreak InvestigationIntroduction The following report will be to investigate a trend in illness reported amongst the staff within the Flinn Corporation. The concern was initially identified by a nurse employed at the company. An outbreak investigation was initiated to determine if Salmonella is the source of the uprise in illness within the corporation and to educate the staff on symptoms and outbreak spread prevention. Various steps of the outbreak investigation will be addressed to include the establishment of the outbreak, verifying the diagnosis, provide the working case definition, conduct descriptive epidemiology, conduct a retrospective cohort study, and apply food safety principles. Step 2: Establish the Salmonella Outbreak On 07 February 2018, an illness outbreak was suspected within Flinn Corporation. Upon interviewing staff between the ages of 20 and 60 years old and specimen collection, an investigation was initiated. Reported cases developed symptoms within the first week of February, between the dates of 01 February and 05 February. Out of 20 staff members interviewed, 12 were reported being ill. 11 of those members ate at the cafeteria. They reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, and blood in the stool. These members were in contact with baked chicken, spinach, mashed potatoes, and other lesser reported foods likely to be the source of the outbreak. Members suspected to be infected with Salmonella. Step 3: Verify DiagnosisA nurse working within the corporation collected stool samples from each member interviewed.
