Topical Anesthesia: Who may apply TA -DA, RDA direct superviosion Non-aerosol Types: benzocaine and zylocaine paste Forms of TA- ointment, cream, liquids, gel, sprays What should be done before applying topical anesthetic - wipe area with 2*2 gauze to help topical anasteshia absorb better Why it is used- provides a temporary numbing effect on nerve endings located on the surface of the oral mucosa, reduce the gag reflex during impression or radiograph The diameter of area- Two primary reasons for using TA- to provide numbing effect in a specific area where an injection is to placed Local Anesthesia: Type of needle: short (blue)-Maxillary - 1 inch long Long (yellow)-Mandiblar- 1 5/8 inch long Infiltration Injection (Maxillary)- directly into the tissue, to the mucobuccal fold areas over the roots of each tooth Block (Mandibular)- near a major nerve, in a depressed area near the anterior border of ramus Why Epinephrine is added to LA- decreases bleeding in the area of surgical procedure The relationship of needle gauge and diameter of needle -Larger gauge number-thinner needle Most common vasoconstrictor- epinephrine - decreases bleeding in the area of surgical procedure Most commonly used anesthetic -1:100,000-regular, 1:50,000-for extract tooth, During an injection of LA aspiration will determine – Aspirating syringes must be used to determine if the lumen (opening) of the needles in a blood vessel How assistant should prepare the anesthetic syringe- Parts of syringe: 1-threded tip, 2- harpoon, 3-piston rod, 4- barrel of syringe, 5-finger grip, 6-finger bar, 7-thumb ring Handpieces numbers: Round Bur - ¼ -10- removes caries Pear-shaped – 330-333- opens tooth for restoration, removes caries Inverted Cone Bur - 33, 34, 37, 39- removes caries Straight Fissure Bur-Crosscut - 556, 557, 558 – cuts cavity prep, forms walls of cavity prep
