What is autism? Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders also known as PDD, Asperser’s Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. . Autism is much more common today than it was fifty years ago. It is estimated that there are one in every one hundred and ten children diagnosed with autism making it more common than childhood diabetes and cancer combined. There are at least 1.5 million people in the U.S. alone that are affected by autism. ( , 2011). Nobody knows why and there hasn’t been an established reason as to what causes it or the current increase. There are many theories on how it is caused and hopefully one day research will show why. The history of autism is documented far back as 1911 when the term was introduced to diagnose adult schizophrenia. It wasn’t until the late 80’s and 90’s that technology first started to develop for use in autism treatment therapy. Some of the first technologies used in treatment of autism spectrum disorder were video tapes. The tapes were used to teach autistic children conversational skills by having them watch videos of conversation, then generalize them with different people in different settings. The early trials in this form of therapy to teach children conversational skills was shown later to not work well for conversation but instead worked well for teaching the children pedestrian skills such as crossing the street.
