November 8, 2010 Adaptive Immunity o Emil Adolf von Behring – 1890 injected guinea pigs with diphtheria toxin o Antibodies – proteins in serum responsible for humoral immunity Now called plasma proteins o Antigen – molecules that stimulate the production of specific antibodies o Lymphocytes o T lymphocytes or T cells mature in the thymus Thymus right above your heart responsible for cell-mediated immunity o B lymphocytes or B cells (bursa of Fabricius) mature in the bone marrow responsible for antibody production and humoral immunity o B Lymphocytes Have B cell receptors on surface that are membrane bound antibodies When exposed to an antigen that binds to it specific membrane bound antibody stimulates cell division Cells become memory cells – indistinguishable from the original cell Plasma cells – actively produce antibodies (these antibodies have the same reactivity as the membrane bound antibodies of the original cell) o o Antibodies or Immunoglobulins (Ig)
