Unformatted text preview: Homework Assignment No. 3 February 4, 2010 Due on February 11, 2010 @ 2:00 PM PGE368 Spring Semester 2010 Fundamentals of Well Logging Instructor: Carlos T. Verdn, Ph.D. INTERPRETATION OF SPECTRAL GAMMA RAY LOGS DESCRIPTION: The objective of this homework assignment is to make qualitative and quantitative assessments of lithology and of the degree of shaliness from standard and spectral gamma ray logs. QUESTIONS: 1. The well log example under consideration is on page 22 of PGE368s Well- Log Compendium. Figure 1 shows the header of the log. Assume that all pertinent environmental corrections (mud weight, borehole size, standoff, and temperature) were applied to the gamma-ray logs. Figure 2 shows some of the logs included in this example. On the logs shown in Figure 2, (a) identify the minimum and maximum values of gamma-ray readings and draw the corresponding shale baseline on gamma-ray, spectral gamma rays, and resistivity logs. (b) Clearly identify the pure shale and pure sand end members of your sedimentary siliciclastic sequence. (c) Identify sands and shales using a simple colored column (yellow for sands and brown for shales). [20 POINTS] Figure 1 : Header of log example Venezuela No. 1 .
