Weaver power plant produces 85 MW. Operating at 40% efficiency, it consumes 124,000 ton/yr of methane and produces 341,000 ton/yr CO2. It is proposed to convert the burner to biomass fuel. The heat of reaction for burning biomass is 12 MJ/kg. The biomass is 30% carbon by weight, i.e. there are 300 kg C in one ton of biomass. Assume the power plant efficiency is the same for biomass as for methane. 15 pts a. Sketch an appropriate control volume, then write appropriate differential balances for mass and energy to answer the following questions. b. How much biomass is needed per year at the power plant? Ignore the enthalpies of air and combustion gas. c. Would the power plant emissions of CO2 increase or decrease if converted to biomass? Give the percentage change.
