PHI 105 January 10, 2012 Amber Cooper What are the ethically legitimate functions of civil servants? To answer this question we must first define what ethics are and how they connect to values and conduct. Ethics are defined as “that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the motives and ends of such actions (dictionary reference.com, 2012). I also discovered while doing research for this project a new term I want to implement in my final topic and it is “deontology.” Deontology is defined as “ethics, especially the branch dealing with duty, moral obligation, and right action” (dictionary.reference.com, 2012). There are several issues I want to explore with my final topic. First, what were the professional moral codes in early America and have those codes or their enforcement changed since they were first enacted?
