2/9/11 Comparing Social Structures Review o Division of Labor The specialization and separate roles people have in society Could be biological—like men and women; women are capable of pregnancy and giving birth, men are not Could be at the household—as a result of biological division, in the household there are different jobs (traditional—men work, women stay home) At a larger level—at University (ie-economists, engineers), Or lawyers/doctors/students Marx—this division causes conflicts. o Alienation: products, process, self, others Because of the increased specialization in labor it causes this Capitalist Process alienates the producer from the product Artist—instead of putting heart and soul into piece they just do it for speed/productivity. Because of this you don’t have any self-actualization, you alienate yourself—disgusted with the repetitiveness o Base-Superstructure
