Preliminaries to BME 410 We’ll post on blackboard.usc.edu: Syllabus with dates (“Syllabus”) Reading (“Reading Materials”) We will have two kinds of reading materials: Those to prepare you for the quizzes at the beginning of the classes. Additional texts to help you understand the lectures. PowerPoint files before lectures (“Lecture Notes”) Posted lectures may not be identical to lectures given in class, as we often include “surprise” elements to make students think or pay attention in class. Grading Policy (“Syllabus ”) Office Hours (“Contacts”) “Discussions”

Textbook The textbook for this course is “ Principles of Tissue Engineering, Third Edition (2007). Lanza, R., Langer, R., & Vacanti, J.P. (Eds.). Elsevier Academic Press, Burlington, MA.” We have also posted scientific articles for reading (see “Reading Materials” on Blackboard).

Structure of the Classes The typical format of a class is as follows: 2:00-2:10 Quiz My philosophy: You are seniors. More than needing to demonstrate knowledge through assignments, you need to demonstrate an ability to read and understand advanced texts. The goals of the quizzes is to ensure that students understand the reading materials and come prepared for classes. The quizzes will be easy if you read the preparatory texts. The format of the quizzes will be of multiple choice, true/false, or list- matching questions. 2:10-3:10 Lecture 3:10-3:20 Break 3:20-4:20 Lecture 4:20-4:50 Group Activity We need break and group activities, because it is difficult to concentrate for 3 hrs nonstop.

Grading Policy Grades will be weighted as follows: Quizzes: 20% Participation: 10% Madison will be taking notes. Exam 1: 35% (10/13; 2:00-4:50 pm) Exam 2: 35% (12/13; 2:00-4:00 pm) Attention: Due to a conflict with another course, the date of Exam 2 (i.e., the final) is different from that listed in the USC Schedule of Classes. The midterm and the final examinations are closed-book tests for which the student is only required to bring a pen. These two examinations are non-cumulative, and use both the multiple- choice format and the short essay/problem format. No make ups will be given. Students who are not able to attend a quiz or an examination for a medical reason must bring a doctor’s note, so that we can make alternative arrangements for grading.
