Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) Greetings CE 3101 students. Classes have not started yet, nonetheless, here is your first lesson 1 for CE 3101 – Computer Applications in Civil Engineering . The topic is “professional email etiquette”. • Email is the single most common application of computers in engineering practice, and a critical component of this class. • Email is the main form of private communication for this class. For example, if you need to miss a class, send me (and the TAs) an email. • Treat every email that you send to me, and to the TAs, as a “professional email”. I will extend the same courtesy to you. • I actually recommend that you treat every email as a “professional email”, but this is your business. It is a good thing to practice, and doing it right really does not take significant additional time or effort. • An email is not a text message on a cell phone. Clarity of exposition, organization of thoughts, spelling, punctuation, and grammar are ALL important in an email. • I am quite serious about enforcing the following rules. Ignore them at your own peril. Here are some DOs and DON’Ts for professional email. 1. EVERY professional email MUST have a meaningful “subject line”....
