Sam Walton once said, “I have always been driven to buck the system, to innovate, to take things beyond where they have been.” As we look at Wal-Mart today his quote is a mere understatement as to how this mega corporation has forever transformed the way we shop and also changed the way goods are sold domestically and abroad with its mission to deliver the lowest price possible. According to Charles Fishman, author of “The Wal-Mart effect” , Wal-Mart completely revolutionized the deodorant buying experience. If you were to purchase deodorant before the early 1990’s, you would have to buy it in a cardboard box (Fishman-1). During this time, Wal-Mart decided to eliminate the card board box. This small decision would save about a nickel per unit. With 200 million deodorant users in the United States, that amounts to a savings of $10 Million dollars per year (Fishman-2). The savings is then passed on to the consumer. Entire forests are still standing as a result of the decision to eliminate card board boxes (Fishman-2). Unfortunately, this decision would not bode well for the paper-box making companies as many of them would feel the enormous rippling wave of the “Wal-Mart Effect.” This is just one of the many ways that Wal-Mart has saved us money over the years. In the coming pages, we will analyze other areas where Wal-Mart has made its impact across the retail landscape and address the question, Is Wal-Mart good or bad for America. Wal-Mart is not just a discount retailer, but a nation of 1.9 Million employees (Standard & Poor’s research) Wal-Mart is the United States largest employer. To put this number in perspective, there are about the same amount of people employed at Wal-Mart as the population of Houston Texas. This is great for unemployment data but bad for the 3
