Week 1 Discussion: Discuss the following in your own words with suitable examples to assist class members for clarity and ease of understanding: 1. Describe a database that you have used on a job or as a consumer. List the entities and relationships that the database contains. If you are not sure, imagine the entities and relationships that are contained in the database. As a Help Desk Manager at a small university, I use a product called Help Desk Expert Automated Tool (HEAT) which we have an SQL backend database. We have customized the product so we can use it for more than tracking tickets. Over the past years, we have been able to use the tool to communicate to IT staff, limited vendor control, communicate to customers (internal university employees only), computer refresh schedule and office asset tracking of technology. This is the part I’m not sure about – listing the entities and relationships. Some of the entities will be our Customers, IT staff, Call Types, Asset Tracking, & Locations. I list these because I have them established as validation tables. Therefore, I can pull the information from these validation tables into other tables of HEAT. Based on my understanding some of the relationships that exist in my database are: Customer ID is related to Location Table; Customer ID is related to the Assets (Computer_Data); Customer ID is related to specific support level. Internally to my department, the IT staff (Employee_Data) is linked to the specialty; IT staff is linked to employee location; IT Staff linked to surveys. These are a few that I’m thinking of as I go through the processes I use on a regular basis. I’m hoping to get a better understanding of the Entity Relationship topic as I read through the rest of the posts. a.
