EML 4147C Homework 1.) A double pipe heat exchanger similar to the one in our lab has an effective length of 3. 5 meters and is constructed with a stainless steel outer pipe and copper inner pipe with the following dimensions: Outer pipe: O.D. = 29.1 mm I.D. = 27.2 mm Inner pipe: O.D. = 22.8 mm I.D. = 20.7 mm The apparatus is equipped with a valve arrangement that allows it to operate in both counterflow and parallel flow configurations. The water source comes off of the water main and is split into the hot and cold water lines. The hot water is heated with an electric resistance heater. The hot water flows through the inner pipe and always flows in the same direction. The cold water will always flow in the outer pipe, and the direction of cold water flow, parallel or counter flow, is controlled with an appropriate valve arrangement. Temperatures are measured at the inlet, midpoint, and exit of the heat exchanger. a)
