CWR 4202 – Hydraulics Spring 2012 Name____________________ Assignment 3 (Due Wednesday, February 8, at beginning of problem session) Problem 1 A new pipe must be installed to replace an old existing one. The new pipe will be 25 meters long and will have the same diameter as the old pipe (210mm). The new pipe is cast iron and has a roughness of 0.00026 meters. The old pipe had a roughness of 0.003 meters. The allowable headloss over the length of the pipe is 0.5 meters. Perform the following tasks assuming water temperature of 10 C. a) Determine the discharge capacity (Q) of the new pipe. b) Confirm that the correct flow range was used for the new pipe calculations. c) What is the discharge capacity (Q) of the old pipe? d) Calculate and compare friction factors for the old and new pipes. Summarize the relationship between friction factors, pipe roughness, and flow. e) What are the characteristic P L values of the old and new pipe? Problem 2
