RELI 106, FALL 2011 STUDY ESSAY QUESTIONS FOR MID-TERM EXAMINATION I Note: Mid-Term Exam I covers the material from the beginning of the semester up to the Seleucid conquest of Palestine in 198 B.C.E. (in other words, it includes the Ptolemaic period but not the Seleucid period). 1) What are the biases of the writers/editors of the Hebrew Bible and how are they expressed in the biblical text? The writers of the Hebrew Bible were pro-Judah and anti-Israel. They favored exclusive Yahwism, not inclusive Yahwism. They also favored centralization of the cult versus decentralization. One example in which this is known is when they condemn Ahab for marrying Jezebel, who worshipped Baal, but loved Solomon who also had wives from other nations that worshipped other gods. Another example is Jeroboam, who made 2 gold calves and put one in Bethel and one in Dan (north and south), as an alternative to worshipping at the Jerusalem temple. Josiah, the king of Judah, tore down and destroyed all alternative gods, and the writers really like him. 2) Who was Ezra and who was Nehemiah, and what did they accomplish in Jerusalem? Why did Ezra oppose intermarriage? Ezra was a descendent of Seraiah the high priest, and was living in Babylon during the exile. He
