Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of quadrat analysis is the interplay between mathematical, statistical and geographical reasoning associated with the interpretation of results. The mathematics of quadrat analysis is concerned with the deduction of logically consistent probability models from a given set of assumptions. Two diametrically opposite problems are embodied in the process of deduction. First it is possible to arrive at the same model from different assumptions. This is the case with compound and generalised versions of contagious probability models. Conversely, we may obtain quite different models for essentially the same idea, by making apparently minor modifications to the original assumptions.
