Preliminary Outline of Arguments Intro: What background do you need to offer the reader? Herbal supplements are treated as food supplements and don’t need to be regulated by the FDA before being put on the shelves Manufacturers of natural health supplements are not obligated to guarantee the safety, effectiveness or even the true content of their products o So most supplements don’t even contain the sources that they say they do Your tentative thesis: Although herbal supplements may be readily available and less costly than prescription drugs, they should be regulated by the FDA as such due to their unpredictability and past history of adverse effects. Con Arguments (what the opposition would argue): Refute / Concede? (Circle one) Con 1 – (strongest) – R or C Prescription drugs cost a alot. Low income families can more easily afford herbal supplements Celebrex, used to treat arthritis, costs more than $4 per day, while ginger supplements, a popular herbal remedy for inflammation, cost about $0.38 per day. “ Con 2 – R or C Herbs are found in nature, while drugs use chemicals not found in nature.
