James Yang Mr. Puma AP Composition August 8 th , 2009 Remains of the Days Lies John F. Kennedy once said, “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.” This quote emphasizes that the well planned out lies in narratives are not what readers fear; instead, myths that have become so persuasive to convince even the author are the ones to recognize. The diary entries that Stevens writes may not purposefully portray lies to confuse the reader, but they still exist in the ones that Stevens tells himself. Whether these lies are to protect his reputation or to uphold the honor of a butler, contradicting examples are found according to statements that he makes. Stevens continued assurance to others that he is not upset or ruffled, along with his unwavering support of Lord Darlington are lies he tells to himself and the readers, resulting in his constant up keeping of his personal shield. The two grandest lies that Stevens tells is about two of the most important men to him:
