Christopher Ross WRA 110, Section 742 RA rough draft October 11, 2011 The Brain's (Dark Energy) Marcus Raichle's article, "The Brain's (Dark Energy)", published by Scientific American in 2010, uses recent analysis of neuroimaging technologies to reveal more about the human mind's key to consciousness than scientists had previously known before. Researchers have used the images produced to disprove the assumption that, "the (neural) activity in the resting brain represents nothing more than random noise".(Raichle) In fact, most things that we do consciously are the result of synapses, electrical signals, coming from the brain's default mode network or DMN. Raichle describes that the downtime, referred to as the brain's "Dark Energy", is also displayed in the slow cortical potentials("SCP's ensure that the right computations occur in a coordinated fashion at exactly the correct moment."). Research of the DMN has shown that it is the master organizer of the brain and more importantly "Brain-imaging studies have found connections among brain cells in the DMN regions of patients with."(Raichle)
