4 elements of listening: Hearing – the physiological process of receiving aural stimuli Interpretation of sound waves – leading to understanding or misunderstanding Evaluation – deciding how to use the information Response – reacting to information Barriers to active listening Lack of interest – we either find it uninteresting or it is too hard to understand Boredom, impatience, daydreaming, preoccupied with something else Distracting delivery – judge speaker’s personal characteristics Fidgeting, disorganized, dresses unusual, inefficient Eternal and internal noise – prevents us from hearing a message Phone ringing, lawn mower Arrogance and disrespect – emotional responses to behaviors Know-it-all attitudes, generalizations (you always… you never) Pre-programmed emotional responses – an issue is brought up that we have a strong reaction to The more important a topic, the more likely to respond from a pre-programmed point of view than a rational response
