Spencer Lane Theater 160 10966400 8 April 2009 Melancholy Play Review Melancholy Play by Sarah Ruhl is an extremely hilarious and crowd pleasing play with themes of gloom, sadness, and finally in the end, happiness. The play follows the actions of Tilly who is suffering from a terrible sadness and shows how everything around her makes her sad, until the end. In watching this play, I was able to analyze the play based on the things that I have learned in this class. In this paper I’m going to evaluate Melancholy Play based on Aristotle’s 5 points of analysis, character, plot, language, music and spectacle. I will do this by comparing what I liked and what I disliked from each category. The characters in this play all offered many quirks and characteristics that made you not want to take your eyes off of the screen. My favorite character in this play was the therapist Lorenzo the Unfeeling. It was very clever and funny when Lorenzo went back and recounted his terrible childhood when he was first introduced into the play. He was very full of energy and cheery from the beginning of the play and it let the audience know he would continue to be this way for the whole play. I liked how all of the characters seemed to be in a 5 way love bunch. It seemed as if all of the other characters were in love with Tilly yet she only wanted Frank. I think
