Lecture 1- Dr. Lydia Ogden 1/18/11 -Medicaid- low income, 45 million people, 14%-18% of America -Medicare- elderly, disabled, 12% -85% of Americans used to have healthcare, so 15% used to not be insured -immigration is not that big of a problem to healthcare -53% get insurance from their employer -5% are personally insured -6% are uninsured by choice can stay on parents insurance until your 26 US population uninsured:  Medicaid eligible but unenrolled-14M, 28% Non-citizens/undocumented-5M, 10% Near-poor-13M, 26% Uninsured by choice-18M, 36% -Spent $2.47 TRILLION dollars on healthcare (up to 5.56%) -What’s Driving Health Spending? 1. Disease Prevalence- Rising rates of obesity-associated conditions: CHD, type 2  diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia treating people earlier and longer 2. Technological Innovation- New interventions, including drugs
