Susan Martinez September 28, 2010 Learning and Motivation Lab Ralitsa Konstantinova Tuesday 6:00 – 7:50 PM Lab Summary 1 Operant conditioning is run by a series of rewards, punishments, and reinforcements; both positive and negative. What was used to train Sniffy the Rat was positive reinforcements. Reinforcements are pleasant consequences used to continue behavior. In the experiment, when Sniffy pressed the bar and/or lever, the operant chamber rewarded him with a food pellet. Because the food was a primary reinforcement for Sniffy, it increased his behavior of continuously pressing the bar overtime. Shaping is another technique of operant conditioning. It involves a system of rewarding minimal behaviors that are steps that lead to the desired behavior. The two factors that affect the effectiveness of reinforcement is the time in which it occurs after the response. It must be done immediately after to be fully effective in the experiment. The second factor that influences Sniffy’s reinforcement is the time in which it takes Sniffy to find the food pellet. For example, he
