Derek Ho Deep Time: How Old is Old? In 1600s , they believed Earth was created on October 23, 4004 BC. Which means Earth is only 6000 years old. Theories how Earth Surface was Formed Catastrophism [an idea how Earth surface was formed] Led by GeorgesCurvier Said Earth had been shaped primarily rapid, catastrophic events Sedimentary rocks and fossils were deposited during these rare times of upheaval Uniformitarianism – processes we see today operated in the past 1785: James Hutton “The present is the key to the past” Figured this out by looking at the ripples and patterns in the marks BOTH THEORIES CAN BE TRUE even though it is usually Uniformitarianism Two Ways to Date Geologic Events 1. Relative Dating - Age of Rocks compared to one another - Sequence of events - First method used to date rocks Nicholas Steno (1669) o Said fossils were remains of ancient life o Suggested first laws for relative dating of rock layers 2. Absolute Dating - Gives an age (years before the present)
