In a chapter of The Culture of Fear , Glassner yet again draws attention to a plethora of misperceptions that surround one of Americas many moral panics. This chapter, titled Smack is Back, enlightens readers about the discrepancies that underlie societys perception of drug abuse and distribution in the United States. A synopsis of Glassners standpoint of the issue is as follows: sensationalism rather than rationality has guided the national conversation. Misinformed about who uses drugs, which drugs people abuse, and with what results, we waste enormous sums of money and fail to address other social and personal problems effectively (p. 31).
