How did we get this way? Migration o The ppl that moved here had ideas that were different from those who didn’t o Religious or political outcasts o Economic immigrants Immigrants that came to America for economic incentives Create governmental system that allows them to trade and do business freely o Slaves, those already here, outside the system Diversity and localism o We want to leave power in the hands of local authorities o We began as local communities, colonies very different o The debate over slavery enshrined localism o Leads to resistance to nationalism of policies o We believe we are different from each other and need specific state/local laws o Parties are local too Economic and social structure o Little class debate in US o No feudal system, no blood revolution, no socialist history No struggle between the peasants and the royal/aristocracy o South – race superseded class as an issue o Universal male suffrage earlier in history therefore political and economic rights
