Secondary Prevention Aim: Stop or slow the progression of a disease in the earliest possible stage to prevent impairment, disability, or death Relies on early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease Early detection and diagnosis often relies on screening tests followed by diagnostic tests Screening: the use of quick, simple, safe, and inexpensive testing procedures to examine apparently healthy people and determine who among them probably has a given disease and who probably does not have that disease Screening tests as Secondary Prevention o Should be targeted to the populations where the disease is most common o Should detect the disease before signs and symptoms appear (before the disease becomes advanced) Are especially valuable for diseases that lack symptoms o Are most useful for diseases that develop slowly Screening is often done on an annual basis (sometimes every 2, 5, or 10 yrs) o Should positively affect the outcome for the patient by getting treatment started early in the disease process o Should be done only when there is an effective treatment available o Are not accurate enough to be used for diagnosis/treatment: some people with the disease being screened for will test negative (false negative results), some people without the disease being screened for will test positive (false positive results) o Need to be followed up with diagnostic tests Diagnostic tests as Secondary Prevention o Are given to those who test positive in a screening test o Are more complicated, invasive, risky, time-consuming, and expensive than screening tests o Are less likely than screening tests to yield false results 1
