Nicolas Canel HST 111 9/27 Voyages of Discovery Magellan -Was convinced he could find a way to the Indias -Convinced Spanish king to sponsor him -1519, 5 ships, 277 crew, Stormy crossing of the Atlantic, searching for the straight to take them through South America -The crew thought he was crazy -1520 he found the straight, emerged in the Pacific Ocean -Thought it would be a small trip from there to Asia, obviously mistaken -Food was created from the most digusting things, Gruel from maggots -1521 Came to Philippine islands, Magellan died -Only 1 ship returned to Spain Beginning of the 16 th century Europeans all over sent out ships for exploration. 1500-1800 European power engulfed the world -Europeans established colonies in America, spread culture, laws and religion -Europeans established themselves as far as Asia -European’s trading in Asia and African dramatically affected the population in the area. -Fundamentally changed the balance in Europe
