Nicolas Canel HST 111 Slavery -Common feature of Africa -Europeans discovered theory of slavery that justified capture of slavery -Muslims used slaves for their army and often purchased them from Europeans -Africans enslaved those captured in war and sold them -Wealthy families primarily purchased slaves -Sugar plantations were being developed in the Canary and Azura Islands -African slaves were able to do intensive labor -Wholesale was cruel and commercial Effects of Slave trade -Commercial manufacturing and slave trade drove smaller businesses out. -Political, the need to maintain slaves led to the increased war in Africa -Community had violence -16 th century Benin -Prosperous, then population declined and people lost faith in their god, human sacrifice became common, and art deteriorated -English came and found corrupt and savage society, took years to rebuild Discovery -Very descriptive of what and who they found -Wealth of this new world waiting to be exploited by the Europeans
