“Mind The Gap” It is extremely hard to close the gap between races and social classes because they are a reinforcing cycle. Most Public schools do not have overall proficient test results for minority or lower SES classes Charter Schools are only a little bit better, and in some cases actually worse for younger kids than public schools The KIPP program has shown huge improvements on test scores for poor and minority children. “What Makes a Great Teacher” There is a small amount of research on what exactly makes a good teacher really good until teach for America started studying its teachers Good Teachers constantly are re-evaluating and changing their teaching methods Prior work with underprivileged kids doesn’t show any correlation to how effective a teacher will be. Evaluating teachers in schools right now is very hard because Principals usually don’t give negative feedback reports for their teachers and because teachers don’t get paid based on performance. Discussion Question: Should teachers have to go to school for more than 4 years?
