10/9/06 Can cause microevolution: Gene flow-Genetic exchange between populations Caused by migration Immigration OR emigration Tends to reduce the genetic differences between populations Slows any evolution that might be happening between populations Mutation – Changes in DNA Doesn’t have much effect on a large population, but they can have cumulative effects on a population Important sources of variation in rapidly reproducing organisms like bacteria. Non-Random Mating Can cause allele frequencies to change – Not every individual has an equal opportunity to reproduce Natural Selection Of all the causes, natural selection is the only one that leads to adaptation Darwinian Fitness is the contribution that an individual makes to the next generation’s gene pool Three general outcomes of natural selection: 1. Directional – Shifts phenotypic average of the population in one direction or the other. The selection that favors an extreme of phenotype.
