Visual and Auditory Codes o Vocalics (nonverbal, vocal) voice set qualities against which all vocal qualities and speech behaviors are judged voice set may be based upon stereotypes or upon life experiences sex, age, health, occupation, wealth, ethnicity voice qualities relatively enduring features of the voice change over time, not rapidly, within a conversation o pitch range (low range = doesn’t change much, high range = much frequent change) o articulation control – precise to slurred o tempo – speed – ranges from fast to slow o rhythm control – smooth to jerky o resonance – has to do with vibrating sound waves; resonant voice seems to vibrate and be thick o glottis control – breathiness – thick to thin o vocal lip control – smoothness to raspiness o pitch control – smooth to jerky transitions (separate from pitch range) vocalizations o specific kinds of sounds that come in three different varieties vocal segregates, vocalized pauses “um, uh, like” (vocal
