The Importance of language and meaning With language you can: form a close relationship offend someone by using sexist language catch attention and market a product create words/slang that only in-group members understand understand a new phenomenon ex: tweeting show power, class, and status what words you use can show this II. Language is symbolic words only have meaning once we assign meaning to them sign- a picture of an apple there is a direct relationship between the sign and the referent symbol: “a-p-p-l-e”; the word no direct relationship between the sign and the referent we make the association referent: the actual apple crucial that we understand the relationship between sign, symbol, and referent III. Words and Meanings denotative meaning dictionary connotative meaning varies from one person to the next and one group to the next at times words and phrases are created to instill group unity
